Emperor Antoninus Pius died this week in 161 CE. This silver denarius shows the laureate head of the emperor with the inscription ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III. He is known as one of the Five Good Emperors during the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, and was the adopted son of Hadrian. The reverse image depicts his adopted son, Marcus Aurelius.
