Theodore Roosevelt and Charles W. Fairbanks Political Campaign Token

Theodore Roosevelt and Charles W. Fairbanks Political Campaign Token, 1904, Bronze, Gift of Janette Starkey, 1964.13.1.

Theodore Roosevelt acceded to ascended to the presidency upon the assassination of William McKinley in 1901. He did not immediately fill the vice-presidential position he had just vacated, but waited until the 1904 election.

To placate conservative members of his party, Roosevelt agreed to nomination of Charles Fairbanks as his vice-president. However, the two were so different in their political vision, that when Roosevelt sought re-election in 1908 he selected William Howard Taft as his running mate.

These types of political campaign tokens functioned much in the same way that political buttons do, and had a hole so that they might be pinned on clothing.
