Joan Markel's Civil War Photo Book

Join us for a slideshow presentation and pre-release book signing by our Curator of Civil War History, Dr. Joan Markel, of her upcoming book Knoxville in the Civil War from the Images of America series. Markel will give a slideshow lecture featuring images from her upcoming book, and then will be on hand to sign copies for attendees.

For four long years, from 1861 to 1865, Knoxville was racked by some of the harshest experiences of the entire Civil War. Armies, battles, famous generals, partisans, and thousands of troops from every state North and South made their mark on the region, leaving a rich military history. However, it was the people of this genuinely American city whose divided loyalties forced families, schools, churches, financial stability, and literally all aspects of community to opposite sides of the deadly conflict. Knoxville in the Civil War explores the people and sites of Knoxville during this troubled time with hundreds of period photographs.
