#SundaySong: Rosa

Today’s #SundaySong has been on heavy rotation, especially during neighborhood walks and yoga sessions. Called Rosa, it’s by artist Rainer Scheurenbrand, a European musician who has studied classical guitar and chamber music at the Hochschule Für Musik and Theater of Hannover. His music has been deeply influenced by time spent traveling in South America and collaborating with Brazilian musician Carioca Freitas to create music “as a tool to heal and to support spiritual growth.”

In my own interpretation of the hypnotic lyrics, which repeat the name or color “rose” over and over again, the song is a meditation or request to be guided and to remember to connect: with plants, with water, with the wind . . . with nature.

“A Pond” (Une Mare), 1867, Adolphe Appian, Etching, Gift from the Max B. and Lalla B. Arnstein Collection, 1962.20.29.

At a time when it can feel like our lives are defined by what we’ve lost, what we might lose, and of course, by the anxiety of not knowing, it is powerful to be reminded to stop and feel how we’re connected to the natural world around us. We cannot control what happens in this world, but we can control how we react.

Feeling connected to the natural world is a way to re-center ourselves and is a reminder that even when we can’t connect in person to many of our loved ones, we are all connected by the natural world around us. Indeed, studies show that being outdoors not only makes us feel more connected to nature, but also promotes a greater sense of social connectivity. The natural world, even when simply experienced from our balcony, our front porch, our garden, or a walk around the block, helps our brains and bodies stay healthy. This meditative song is a reminder to open one’s heart to the beauty around us and to connect during these difficult times.
