King Neptune's dinner party aboard the 1929-1930 "Round the World Cruise"

Cruise Ship Dinner Menu

Pamphlet, 1930, Canadian, Paper, Bequest of Judge John Webb Green and Ellen McClung Green, 1957.3.222.117.

King Neptune’s Dinner Party was aboard the S.S. Empress of Australia on January 27, 1930. The “Round the World Cruise” was part of Canadian-Pacific Steamship Lines’ 1929-1930 lineup. It departed on November 14 from Southampton, UK, for a 163 day journey. The menu is a large sheet of blue and yellow marbled watercolor paper folded in fourths. King Neptune’s face is pictured on the front with his trident holding the banner. Inside is a listing of the musical selections that accompanied the dinner, including Waldteufel’s majestic “Pomone Waltz”, as well as the night’s menu. A four-course dinner was served, complete with soufflé Rothschild, a fruity soufflé originally spiked with gold-specked Danziger Goldwasser liquor, and Waldorf salad, named appropriately after the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1896.
