Handmade "Courthouse" Pattern Quilt

Handmade “Courthouse” Pattern Quilt

Handmade “Courthouse” Pattern Quilt, c. 1864, Cotton, 82 x 80 inches, Gift of Mrs. Curtis W. Haynes, 1987.14.1.

“Courthouse” or “Courthouse Steps” quilt patterns represent a variant of the “Log Cabin” pattern that became popular during the Civil War. Homebound Northern and Southern women supported the war effort by sewing quilts to sell at fundraising events or to donate as bedding for soldiers.
