Czar Nicholas II of Russia abdicated on March 2nd, 1917. This portfolio was sent from Russia to Prof. W. W. Carson of The University of Tennessee by his sister, whose husband, C. R. Breckinridge, was minister to Russia during President Cleveland’s 2nd administration (1893-1897). The Breckinridges knew the last Czar and his family personally. This item bears the Imperial Russian Crest of that time.
