Scholars, Scoundrels, and the Sphinx: An Archaeological and Photographic Adventure Up the NileScholars, Scoundrels, and the Sphinx: An Archaeological and Photographic Adventure Up the Nile
Elaine Altman Evans

The catalog for the January-July 2000 McClung Museum exhibition of that name

This book, by curator Elaine Altman Evans, tells an absorbing, well-illustrated story of the exploration and documentation of an endlessly fascinating ancient culture by serious practitioners of two emerging disciplines -- Egyptology and photography. William Peck, Curator of Ancient Arts at the Detroit Institute of Arts, observes: "It is a story that is conveyed with ancient artifacts and vintage photographs in a way that makes the early 'discovery' of Egypt come alive....Long after the exhibition, the catalogue will remain a valuable compendium of information on the history of Egyptology, Egyptologists, and Egypto-enthusiasts." Lanny Bell, Associate Professor Emeritus, Oriental Institute Museum, University of Chicago, adds: "Useful for travelers, photographic buffs, and those interested in Egypt in general, this catalogue will also be a valuable educational resource...."

The 134-page catalog has 202 illustrations and sells for $18.50 + tax if applicable.
