GENERAL COLLECTION
The McClung Museum houses a number of smaller collections of value, interest and beauty, in addition to its large, scientific research collections. Some objects in these wide-ranging, general collections, spanning many centuries, cultures and materials, are a source of numerous research projects and publications. They are also featured and used in the Museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions, in loans to other institutions and outreach programs. In order to serve in their educational role, they have been accessioned, registered, documented, cataloged, entered into a data base and housed according to museum standards, making them readily available for further analysis and other research purposes.
Since the founding of the Museum in 1961, gifts and purchases of various objects have added significantly in large part to the Museum’s programs. As a result the collections have increased in size, quality and content, including the categories of ancient Egyptian artifacts and related objects; ancient Roman artifacts; antique ornithological engravings and lithographs; Civil War; decorative arts; early photographs and allied items; ethnology; local history; WWI and WWII military material. Through the years these diversified collections continue to grow to fulfill the Museum’s essential purpose to serve the state, region and nation.
