Beginning in the late 1920s, excavations of tombs in the Harsin, Khurramabad, and Alishtar valleys of the Zagros Mountains in the western Iranian province of Luristan (Lorestan) produced large numbers of bronze weapons, jewelry, horse trappings, and other objects. The people who made these objects are thought to be Cimmerians, a nomadic people from southern Russia, or by related Indo-European peoples such as the early Medes or Persians. The large number of bronzes that reached museums and collections throughout the world are generally referred to as "Luristan Bronzes."
