Multi-Colored Head Strap

Head Strap, 1914-1923, silk, 130 inches long, Richard Carson, 1982.9.2.

Multi-colored cincha de cabeza (head strap) with banded geometric, animal, and floral motifs woven in yellow, aqua, pink, reddish-purple, black, and white silk. Some of the bands were made using the “dovetailed technique” which results when two wefts from adjacent areas alternately wrap around the same warp. This head strap is from Chichicastenango, Guatemala and was intended to be wound around a hat brim with the tassels hanging down the back.
