Archaeology and the Native Peoples of Tennessee

Social Studies/science, Grades K-12

Elementary students concentrate on the lifeways of Tennessee Indians and how they met basic needs, made tools, and used the resources of the natural environment. Changing technology, economy, and society and interactions with Europeans are also addressed. Time permitting, students can try out replica tools.

exhibit photoMiddle and high school students focus on the science of archaeology as they make hypotheses about people of the past and discuss the evidence for those hypotheses. Included are the relationship between human actions and plant adaptations in the development of domesticated plants, the effects of human settlement on the natural environment, and the complex relationships between Europeans and Native peoples.
