Discovering American Indian Art

Temporary Exhibit
Available August 31, 2009-January 8, 2010

MaskSocial studies/art, Grades K-12
Time required: 45 minutes- 1 hour

Geography, trade, history, and visual art are intertwined in this exhibition of striking and beautiful examples of American Indian art from the United States and Canada. More than 70 examples from the 10 culture areas of North America underscore the diversity found in Native American art, from the use of different raw materials to use of art in Indian cultures to expression of ethnic identity, status, personal achievement, and artistic skill. The exhibit includes 19th and 20th century works, and many earlier pieces are illustrated by historic photographs showing their use by Native peoples. Contemporary pieces show the cultural continuity and pride of modern Indian artists.
