Franklin D. Roosevelt and VP John Garner on a political pin

Franklin D. Roosevelt pin

Political pin, c. 1930s, gold-plated metal, donated by John Duvall, 1972.11.35.

This quarter-sized clothing pin depicts the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and vice-president, John Garner, in profile. It was made by the Chicago based Green Duck Metal Stamping Company, which was in business from 1906-2004. With the country still in the depths of the Great Depression, FDR delivered the following words during his second inaugural speech in January 1937: “In every land there are always at work forces that drive men apart and forces that draw men together. In our personal ambitions we are individualists. But in our seeking for economic and political progress as a nation, we all go up, or else we all go down, as one people.”
