“The Englishmen’s Arrival in Virginia” Engraved Print

1590 – A hand-colored engraving of the Virginia coast from “A briefe and true report of the new found land of Virginia”, Volume I of Theodor De Bry’s Grand Voyages, after a painting by John White, Roanoke Island colonist and artist. The text, written in German with English translations (not pictured) was provided by Thomas Hariot, another member of the colony. On August 18, 1590, John White, now governor of Roanoke Colony, returned from a prolonged resupply trip to England to find the settlement deserted. 12.25 inches high.
