Relief on Bronze Medallion

1911 – Relief profile bust of Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836), composer of “La Marseillaise”, the French national anthem. Although de Lisle enlisted into the army as an engineer and attained the rank of captain during the French Revolution, he was a royalist and was cashiered and thrown into prison in 1793. Narrowly escaping the guillotine, he was freed during the Thermidorian Reaction. 2.25 inches diameter.
